After 45 Years: Nickelodeon To Bring H.R. Pufnstuf Back To Life

LOS ANGELES (AP) — H.R. Pufnstuf is coming back to television, and he’s bringing a few old pals along with him. More than 40 years after the debut of the “H.R. Pufnstuf” children’s series, its title puppet character will pay a visit to Nickelodeon’s new “Mutt & Stuff,” the cable channel said Tuesday.

Pufnstuf will be joined by Freddy the Flute and Cling and Clang — along with that duo’s cool Rescue Racer — on a “Mutt & Stuff” episode taping next month. It’s scheduled to air in early 2016.

“Mutt & Stuff,” as the title suggests, shares family history with “H.R. Pufnstuf”: Both are from prolific children’s TV producers Sid and Marty Krofft.

Nickelodeon’s series for preschoolers, which debuted in July, features a mix of puppets and real puppies in its dog-school setting. Calvin Millan, the 16-year-old son of Cesar Millan of “The Dog Whisperer” fame, joins with friend and larger-than-life dog puppet Stuff to provide training tips and lessons on canine loyalty and love.

“Mutt & Stuff” is the first children’s TV show from the Kroffts since they produced “Land of the Lost,” the 1974-77 series about a family’s adventures in an alternate universe populated by dinosaurs.

The reason for Pufnstuf’s visit? He’s Stuff’s uncle. Marty Krofft promises that Pufnstuf will be the same life-sized, redheaded, cowboy-boot-wearing puppet familiar to viewers of the show that debuted in the late 1960s.

“We don’t mess with our characters,” Krofft, 78, said in an interview, speaking for himself and sibling Sid, 86.

Just 17 episodes of “H.R. Pufnstuff” were created for its original 1969-71 run on NBC, but they’ve lived on in reruns (with MeTV their current home) and the memories of fans.

The show proved so indelible that a 2007 TV Guide poll of all-time cult favorites saw it ranked No. 27, sandwiched between “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman” and “Stargate SG-1.”

Some wags may credit its enduring popularity to the notion that it was a true child of the ’60s — in others words, that “H.R. Pufnstuf” had a certain recreational drug aura about it.

Marty Krofft flatly rejects that as untrue.

“If we did the drugs everybody thought we did, we’d be dead today,” he said, adding, “you cannot work stoned.”

He suggests it was the show’s surreal and brightly colored look, in an era marked by hallucinogenic imagery, that prompted such speculation. Another stubborn idea, that the initials “H.R.” signified hand-rolled (as in marijuana joint), was also misguided, according to Krofft: They stood for Royal Highness, backward, he said.

The Beatles, themselves fending off claims that their 1967 song “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” was a veiled reference to LSD, were among those who found the show intriguing.

The group’s manager, Brian Epstein, called to request that copies of the show be mailed to them in England, Krofft said, a request that brother Sid double-checked years later when Ringo Starr become his neighbor in Los Angeles.

Starr in turn had a question for Sid Krofft, according to Marty: “How many drugs did you do?” the Beatle inquired. (Again, Marty Krofft adds, the answer was none.)

The Kroffts have big plans for Pufnstuf and crowd, with possible vehicles including a feature film and their own new TV series. And the siblings are busier than expected with “Mutt & Stuff,” since its ratings success prompted Nickelodeon to double its season-one order to 40 episodes. Pufnstuf himself may return in future episodes.

“To make another hit at this time in our lives, I’ve got to give ourselves a pat on the back,” Marty Krofft said.

They have more works in progress including “Electra Woman and Dyna Girl,” which originated as part of ABC’s “The Krofft Supershow” in the 1970s and is being rebooted with YouTube stars Grace Helbig and Hannah Hart.

Might other producers be resting on their felt-covered laurels at this point? “What am I gonna do, retire and watch daytime television and be dead in a month?” Krofft replied.

SpongeBob SquarePants Honored With Tribute at Kids Choice Awards

The 2019 Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards took place on Saturday and during the annual broadcast, there was a salute to SpongeBob SquarePants. it was a special moment as the original Broadway cast of The SpongeBob SquarePants Musical performed in what was an emotional and unforgettable moment in the broadcast. Ending appropriately with the iconic Sweet Victory in honor of SpongeBob SquarePants Creator Stephen Hillenburg who passed away in November of 2018.

The rock song Sweet Victory was forever linked to SpongeBob SquarePants thanks to an episode in which SpongeBob SquarePants and his friends from Bikini Bottom performed the song during an appearance known as the bubble bowl.

It was a fitting tribute following a huge disappointment in February when fans of the yellow sponge had petitioned the NFL to honor Stephen Hillenburg with a performance of Sweet Victory during the Super Bowl which ended up being a huge disappointment. Nickelodeon came through with an epic performance that honored fans of SpongeBob SquarePants.

SpongeBob SquarePants has been the face of Nickelodeon for decades first premiering in May 1999.

Cousins For Life Cast Take Part In PSA To Keep Nickelodeon on AT&T DirecTV

Disputes between AT&T DirecTV and Viacom could once again leave fans of Nickelodeon and the other networks owned by Viacom without access to multiple networks. As part of the last minute efforts to keep the channel on the air for DirecTV customers, Nickelodeon has released a PSA featuring the cast of the series Cousins For Life.

In a statement, Viacom said it has “made a series of offers that are good for consumers and good for AT&T” but got a cool reception on the other side of the negotiating table. reported Deadline.

“Unfortunately, AT&T is abusing its new market position by favoring its own content – which significantly underperforms Viacom’s – to stifle competition,” Viacom’s statement continued. “AT&T-DirecTV’s behavior is also consistent with a recent pattern of gouging their customers by charging them higher prices for an inferior product with fewer channels. Especially troubling, AT&T-DirecTV is marginalizing diverse audiences in its new DTV packages and threatening to do the same with their existing products.

“Viacom is committed to developing strong relationships with our distribution partners,” the statement adds. “We have successfully renewed a series of distribution relationships representing more than half our subscriber base over the last two years and have not had a disruption in our service since 2014. While we continue to make every effort to reach a new carriage agreement, AT&T’s unwillingness to engage in constructive conversations unfortunately could force a disruption in service.”

Are You Afraid of the Dark?

Nickelodeon Announces New “Are You Afraid of The Dark?” Miniseries

Nickelodeon has announced the return of its popular 90s era series Are You Afraid of the Dark?” via press release,

“The beloved anthology series will return this October as a brand-new miniseries and follow new members of the Midnight Society as they gather around a campfire in the woods to share scary stories. The miniseries will coincide with the upcoming Are You Afraid of the Dark? theatrical movie from Paramount Pictures, Paramount Players’, and Nickelodeon Movies, in theaters October 2019.”

The original TV series debuted on Nickelodeon in 1990, delivering young viewers tales of terror in the vein of Tales From the Crypt, yet with tamer subject matter. Each episode featured a group of teenagers, dubbed the “Midnight Society,” coming together around a campfire in hopes of scaring one another.

The open-ended nature of the original series meant that there was rarely a focus on crafting an overall narrative to the series, leaving us to wonder if the miniseries will take the same route or, knowing there are a limited number of episodes, if it will craft not only episodic horror stories but also a narrative among the Midnight Society themselves. Additionally, by delivering audiences not only a movie but also a miniseries, this could be Nickelodeon attempting to see if there is enough interest to revive the series in an official capacity.

Since the announcement of the Are You Afraid of the Dark? film, fans have speculated about how the anthology format will translate into a feature film. While details about that narrative are still being kept under wraps, writer Gary Dauberman promised the film will honor the spirit of the original series.

“That show is so important to me. I didn’t want to age it down too much because for it’s time, it had some really disturbing episodes and some really dark episodes. Not every story the Midnight Society told ended with happily ever after or a person learning their lesson and it will never happen again,” Dauberman admitted to SlashFilm. “I really embraced that side of things and I think it’s been a long time. I think fear is healthy for kids. I don’t think we have to always sand down the edges of things and that’s something I really wanted to do with Are You Afraid of the Dark? I think it is scary and I think kids will be scared watching it at times, and also they’ll laugh at times. I think it’s got a great message. I think it’s got a great heart to it but it is still scary. I think that’s great. I think it’s going to open it up to a wider audience.”
