Geena Davis Reveals Why She’s Not Returning for ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’

The highly anticipated sequel to the 1988 classic film Beetlejuice is set to hit theaters on September 6. Titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the movie will see the return of several original cast members, including Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara. However, one notable absence from the sequel is Geena Davis, who played the role of ghost Barbara Maitland in the original film.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Davis, now 68, explained the reason behind her decision not to return for the sequel. “No, I’m not. I’m not in the remake,” she said, addressing the expectations of fans who were hoping to see her reprise her role.

Davis went on to provide her theory on why her character would not fit into the new storyline. “Oh, you were expecting that I would be? Yeah, no, you know what? Because my theory is that ghosts don’t age … Not that I have,” she quipped, referring to the fact that her character, along with her on-screen husband, were stuck in the same appearance they had at the time of their death.

“Our characters were stuck the way they looked when they died forever, so it’s been a while, it’s been a minute,” Davis added, emphasizing the significant time gap between the original film and the upcoming sequel.

Despite not being involved in the project, Davis expressed her curiosity about the sequel’s trailer, which she has not yet seen. “I heard the trailer came out and somebody said they were crying, so I have to see the trailer,” she said, showing her continued interest in the franchise.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice will introduce a new character, Astrid Deetz, played by Jenna Ortega. Astrid is the daughter of Lydia Deetz, the character portrayed by Winona Ryder in the original film. The sequel also features an impressive cast of newcomers, including Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, and Willem Dafoe.

With Tim Burton returning to direct the film, fans can expect the same quirky, dark humor and visually stunning effects that made the original Beetlejuice a cult classic. While Geena Davis’ absence may disappoint some fans, the return of key cast members and the addition of fresh talent promises to make Beetlejuice Beetlejuice a must-see for both old and new fans of the franchise.
