In a surprise appearance on “Saturday Night Live” over the weekend, Iowa Hawkeyes basketball star Caitlin Clark proved she’s not just a force on the court but also a comedian in the making. With the WNBA Draft looming, Clark took the opportunity to poke fun at “Weekend Update” host Michael Che and his jokes about women’s sports and the WNBA.
During the segment, Clark handed Che a few “jokes” she had written for him to read aloud. One quip went, “The Indiana Fever have the first pick in this Monday’s draft. A reminder that Indiana Fever is a WNBA team and not what Michael Che gave to dozens of women at Purdue University.” Clark smiled and added, “Now that’s a good joke about women’s sports.”
The rising star didn’t stop there. She also took a jab at Che’s Netflix special, offering him “three pointers” of advice: “1 – Be, 2 – Funnier, 3 – Dumba–.” The playful exchange showcased Clark’s quick wit and willingness to stand up for women’s sports.
As the segment came to a close, Clark expressed her excitement about the start of her WNBA career and paid tribute to the trailblazing women who paved the way for her, including Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, Cynthia Cooper, Dawn Staley, and Maya Moore. In a final gesture of goodwill, she presented Che with a signed apron.
Clark, who set the all-time NCAA Division 1 basketball scoring record this year, is expected to be the No. 1 pick in the WNBA Draft by the Indiana Fever. Although her Iowa team fell short in the national championship against Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks, Clark’s star power and charisma continue to shine bright.
As she prepares to take her talents to the professional level, Caitlin Clark’s surprise “SNL” appearance demonstrates that she’s not only ready to make a splash in the WNBA but also to bring a fresh perspective and a good sense of humor to the world of sports entertainment.
