Netflix has officially announced a reboot of Little House on the Prairie, bringing the world of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s classic books back to television. The upcoming series, produced by CBS Studios and Anonymous Content Studios, aims to reimagine the journey of the Ingalls family with a contemporary lens while staying rooted in historical authenticity.
Revisiting the Ingalls Family Journey
The new adaptation will follow Charles and Caroline Ingalls as they move with their daughters, Laura and Mary, from Wisconsin to Independence, Kansas. The first season will be based on Little House on the Prairie, the second book in Wilder’s series, and will include Osage characters to highlight the cultural and historical complexities of the era.
Rebecca Sonnenshine (The Boys, The Vampire Diaries, Archive 81) has been tapped as the showrunner and executive producer. Additional executive producers include Joy Gorman Wettels, Dana Fox, and Susanna Fogel. Trip Friendly, son of Ed Friendly—who was an executive producer on the original NBC series—will also be involved.
The Legacy of Little House on the Prairie
Before becoming a television phenomenon, Little House on the Prairie was a beloved book series based on Wilder’s childhood experiences in the late 1800s. The books inspired the iconic TV adaptation that aired on NBC from 1974 to 1983, starring Michael Landon as Charles Ingalls and Melissa Gilbert as Laura.
Unlike many family dramas of the time, Little House combined heartfelt storytelling with emotional depth, tackling themes of resilience, hardship, and community. Landon, who also served as producer, was instrumental in shaping the show’s tone and message, making it one of the most cherished family dramas in TV history.
The series’ popularity has endured for decades, finding new audiences through reruns and streaming. In 2024, Little House on the Prairie saw a resurgence on Peacock, where it amassed over 13.25 billion viewing minutes, demonstrating its lasting impact.
A Reboot Years in the Making
Netflix’s announcement comes after years of speculation about a revival. Given the platform’s trend of reimagining classic stories, it’s no surprise they’ve chosen to bring Little House on the Prairie back to the screen.
Reboots often generate strong reactions, and early responses on social media suggest a mix of excitement and skepticism. Some fans are eager to see how the new series will expand on historical storytelling, while others wonder if it can capture the spirit of the original.
With a high-profile creative team and a modernized perspective, Netflix’s Little House on the Prairie has the potential to introduce a new generation to the Ingalls family while paying homage to its enduring legacy.
