Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 has landed on Netflix, giving fans who missed the horror sequel in theaters or during its earlier Peacock window a new way to stream it. The film became available in the United States on August 3, part of an ongoing licensing arrangement between Netflix and Universal Pictures, though its stay on the platform is expected to be limited to roughly ten months before it moves on again.
The sequel picks up in 2002, two years after the events of the first film, as Mike Schmidt and Vanessa Shelly try to rebuild something resembling normal life. That fragile peace falls apart when Mike’s sister Abby sneaks back to the original Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, setting off a fresh wave of horror tied to the building’s animatronic past. Emma Tammi returned to direct, working once again from a script by series creator Scott Cawthon.
Much of the core cast came back for the sequel. Josh Hutcherson reprises Mike Schmidt, Elizabeth Lail returns as Vanessa Shelly, Piper Rubio is back as Abby Schmidt, and Matthew Lillard once again plays William Afton. Their continued presence gives the sequel a sense of connective tissue with the first film, even as the story pushes the characters into darker territory.
The sequel also brings in a wave of new faces. Skeet Ulrich joins as Henry Emily, Freddy Carter takes on Michael Afton, Wayne Knight appears as Mr. Berg, and Teo Briones and Theodus Crane round out the cast as Alex and Jeremiah.
One newcomer TDN readers will already recognize is Mckenna Grace, who joins the franchise as Lisa. Grace has spent the last several years building one of the more impressive resumes among young performers working today, moving fluidly between horror, drama, and franchise blockbusters. Her casting in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 fits a pattern TDN has tracked closely, a young actor continuing to seek out roles that stretch beyond typecasting rather than settling into a single lane. Where Lisa fits into the film’s expanding mythology has been kept relatively under wraps, which only adds to the intrigue around her performance for longtime followers of Grace’s career.
Audrey Lynn-Marie’s performance as Charlotte Emily is another standout among the newcomers. Charlotte is the daughter of Henry Emily, and her spirit is bound to the Marionette, one of the franchise’s most iconic and mysterious figures. Lynn-Marie brings a quiet sadness to the role that grounds the character’s supernatural side in something far more human, tracing Charlotte’s arc from a lonely, overlooked kid to a spirit driven by grief and a need to protect other children. She has said she wanted the emotional reality of each scene to guide her performance, and that instinct shows in how Charlotte comes across on screen, more wounded than menacing even at her most frightening.
Financially, the film has been another win for the franchise, pulling in more than 238 million dollars worldwide against a budget that topped out around 51 million. Critics were more divided, with several reviews noting the film leans heavily on franchise lore that may reward longtime fans more than casual moviegoers. Either way, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is now easy to find for anyone who wants to catch up before its Netflix window closes.
