AMC is digging up an old friend for spooky season. The network has announced that the Crypt Keeper, the wisecracking host of the ’90s HBO cult classic Tales from the Crypt, will serve as the official host of this year’s FearFest, AMC’s annual Halloween programming block. And judging by the announcement photo, the old ghoul has picked up a new hobby: he looks to have taken up DJing.
Original Crypt Keeper voice actor John Kassir is back behind the microphone, so the Keeper will sound exactly the way fans remember, cackle and all. The puppet itself is getting a refresh courtesy of legendary effects artist Greg Nicotero, the Walking Dead veteran behind Creepshow. Nicotero rebuilt the iconic puppet at his KNB EFX studio from Kevin Yagher’s original design, updating its look, movement, and personality for today’s audiences, and directed the new hosting segments in collaboration with AMC Global Media’s Content Room. AMC is billing the spots as the first new Crypt Keeper content in 30 years.
“What a great honor and privilege to re-create this iconic character and get a chance to revisit some of his clever quips and puns with John Kassir again reprising his role,” Nicotero said in a statement. “Having the chance to recreate Kevin Yagher’s amazing puppet at my studio KNB EFX and get the opportunity to ‘direct him’ in a series of FearFest spots was like going back in time, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome.”
The announcement is steeped in nostalgia. Tales from the Crypt ran for seven seasons on HBO, and its comeuppance-laden stories featured early-career turns from future stars like Brad Pitt, Demi Moore, Kyle MacLachlan, and Patricia Arquette, with episodes directed by the likes of William Friedkin, Tobe Hooper, and Robert Zemeckis. But the Crypt Keeper was always the main attraction, gleefully skewering each episode’s doomed characters with ruthless wit.
The groundwork for this reunion was laid earlier this year, when AMC’s sister streamer Shudder brought all seven seasons of Tales from the Crypt to streaming for the first time, ending the show’s long run as one of the hardest series to watch legally outside of physical media.
“FearFest has long been one of AMC’s most beloved horror traditions, and we couldn’t be happier to resurrect the Crypt Keeper as this year’s master of ‘scary-monies’ as we celebrate 30 years of FearFest,” said Kim Granito, chief marketing officer for AMC Global Media. “Revived by Greg Nicotero, a master of special effects and genre storytelling, the Crypt Keeper will give fans a fresh and wickedly fun gateway into our incredible horror library.”
The festivities kick off Thursday, October 1 on AMC and AMC+, with more than 650 hours of horror programming planned across the month. Alongside Tales from the Crypt marathons, this year’s lineup includes the Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Final Destination, and Insidious franchises, a deep dive into Stephen King’s library with It (2017), the It miniseries, The Shining, Misery, and Christine, plus creature features like Gremlins, The Fly, and The Thing. Themed marathons include “Fear the ’80s” and “Creature Feature,” and the event brings the AMC premiere of The Terror: Devil in Silver alongside AMC+’s new supernatural thriller YAGA, starring Carrie-Anne Moss, Noah Reid, and Hudson Williams.
