Mike Flanagan’s eight-episode Carrie arrives October 7 on Prime Video, and the horror showrunner is now sharing new details on his present-day reimagining of Stephen King’s first novel. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Flanagan opened up about the show’s grueling prom shoot, his vision of Carrie White as part of a larger story about gifted women coming into their power, and how the series connects to King’s wider universe.
At the center of it all is prom night. With flames behind her and screaming classmates ahead, Carrie (Summer H. Howell) is soaked in pig’s blood from a prank bucket drop staged by bully Chris Hargensen (Alison Thornton). Flanagan obsessed over getting the blood right, calling the “wateriest” mixture more paint than the opening of Hell’s maw, while three tiers of flame bars and out-of-sync sprinklers turned the shoot into a logistical battle. The crew commemorated the ordeal with shirts reading “I Survived the Prom.” Flanagan ranks the sequence alongside the time-blending oner from The Haunting of Hill House as the most elaborate of his career.
The series moves King’s story into the present, framing it as a tale of cruelty, kindness, and teenage life in the social media era. Ewen High’s gymnasium is dressed for a Starry Night prom, though the banners behind the decorations celebrate victories from 2016 through 2023. Howell’s Carrie, 22 and from Manitoba, Canada, grew up entirely off the grid, raised by her religious mother Margaret (Samantha Sloyan) and conspiracy-theorist father Ralph (Tahmoh Penikett) in a house without modern tech. The state does not learn the family exists until Ralph dies in a construction accident, and Carrie enters public school for the first time just as her telekinetic abilities return. More than 1,000 actors auditioned; Flanagan cast Howell after a first call that happened to land on April Fool’s Day, and asked her to skip both the novel and past adaptations so she would not imitate Sissy Spacek.
The bullying that sets everything in motion is thoroughly modern. Chris records Carrie’s first period in the locker room and turns it into an Instagram account that rattles the whole town. Thornton says there are no monsters in the show: her character lashes out from pain following her parents’ separation, bullying being the only control she has left. Margaret gets a similar rethink. Rather than the novel’s abusive tyrant, Sloyan plays her from a mother’s undying love, even as she keeps choosing violence. Siena Agudong co-stars as Sue Snell, the classmate who shows Carrie real kindness, and Tim Bagley plays guidance counselor Mr. Morton, a minor novel character expanded for television.
Flanagan is also weaving Carrie into King’s larger mythology. He notes that Carrie’s “TK gene” would likely have been called “the Shining” had King written the book a few years later, and suggests she could have drawn the attention of the Institute or the True Knot from Doctor Sleep. Starting with the second episode, each installment opens with a vignette about a different gifted woman from another era, and Flanagan did not rule out the series becoming a backdoor into his long-gestating Dark Tower adaptation. King serves as an executive producer.
The cast is packed with Flanagan regulars. Kate Siegel plays an undisclosed role in her tenth collaboration with her husband, while Sloyan marks her seventh. Rahul Kohli and Michael Trucco are each on their sixth Flanagan project, Crystal Balint her fourth, and Matthew Lillard (Principal Grayle) and Katee Sackhoff their second.
Prime Video has revealed the titles of all eight episodes, leaning into the high school setting: “First Period,” “Foreign Language,” “Social Studies,” “Dramatic Arts,” “Physical Education,” “Home Economics,” “Romantic Literature,” and “AP Physics.” The premiere title nods to the locker room incident that first unlocks Carrie’s telekinetic abilities.
After Carrie, Flanagan’s slate includes The Exorcist: Martyr(s), The Mist, Henry Cavill’s Warhammer 40,000 series, and hopefully The Dark Tower. And despite the blood and dread, the set had its lighter moments: the production kept a physical fart machine on hand to break tension during heavy scenes, with Howell herself once working the trigger.
