Inde Navarrette is getting Studio 8H for Halloween night. NBC announced Wednesday that the breakout star of Obsession will host Saturday Night Live on October 31, with Gracie Abrams returning as musical guest for her second appearance on the show. It is Navarrette’s first time hosting, and it places the year’s biggest horror discovery at the center of the most costume friendly episode on the SNL calendar.
The timing is hard to miss. Obsession opened in theaters from Focus Features on May 15 after premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival the previous September, and it became the box office story of 2026. Curry Barker wrote, directed and edited the film on a reported budget of roughly $750,000, and it has gone on to gross more than $500 million worldwide, making it the highest grossing release in Focus Features history and one of the highest grossing horror films ever made. Barker is already lining up a follow up at the studio with Anything But Ghosts. Obsession has been streaming on Peacock since July 17, which means the platform carrying Navarrette’s hosting debut live already has her breakout performance sitting on demand.
In the film she plays Nikki Freeman, a music store employee who becomes the target of a wish made on a supernatural toy by her coworker Bear, played by Michael Johnston. The part asks her to move between warmth and real menace, sometimes inside a single scene, and reviewers repeatedly singled her out for keeping the character human as the story escalates. Navarrette has said she deliberately avoided playing Nikki as unhinged, wanting her to read as a girl rather than a horror movie construct. The performance earned her the Best Performance award at the 2026 Seattle International Film Festival.
Navarrette, who is 25 and was born in Tucson, Arizona, took an unusually mobile route to this point. Her father’s military service moved the family often, and she has said she attended 11 schools by the time she was 15 before settling largely in Visalia, California. She started out with a 2018 short film and the 2020 feature Wander Darkly, joined the fourth season of Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why, and then spent four seasons and more than 40 episodes on Superman & Lois, a run that gave her a steady television base well before Obsession changed the scale of everything.
That momentum has already turned into two of the more closely watched jobs in the business. She was announced as Rogue when Disney revealed its X-Men cast at D23 in August, and earlier this month she signed on to lead The Waffle House Index for Apple Original Films and Plan B, a project she is also executive producing. Louis Paxton directs from a script by Andrew Nunnelly, built around a woman working the graveyard shift at a Waffle House as a storm bears down. She also recently wrapped the thriller Invertigo.
The Halloween slot arrives as part of a fall stretch SNL laid out all at once. Season 52 premieres September 26 with Jalen Brunson hosting for the first time and KATSEYE as musical guest, followed by Dakota Johnson with Turnstile on October 3 and Shane Gillis with Rosalía on October 10. Navarrette and Abrams close out the announced run on October 31.
Saturday Night Live airs at 11:30 p.m. ET and 8:30 p.m. PT on NBC and streams live on Peacock. For an actor whose year has been defined by a film about a wish that works a little too well, a Halloween hosting debut is a fitting way to spend the night.
