Violet McGraw is taking the lead role in Tubi’s upcoming original comedy “Summer’s Last Resort,” a YA feature that puts the “M3GAN” and “The Haunting of Hill House” actor at the center of Fox’s growing push into Gen Z streaming films. Tubi announced the project in January with Sophia Bush, Jerry O’Connell and Tim Rozon joining the cast as production got underway.
The film follows Summer, a tightly wound teenager whose vacation spirals when she gets stuck traveling with her mother’s boyfriend, who also happens to be her vice principal. According to Tubi’s official synopsis, Summer secretly plots to break up the relationship, setting off what the streamer describes as a week of sabotage, chaos and unexpected turns. The Futon Critic first carried the studio announcement on January 15.
McGraw plays the title character. Sophia Bush stars as Summer’s mother, Milly, while Jerry O’Connell plays Glenn, the vice principal caught in the middle of the family clash. Tim Rozon also appears as “Captain Otto,” a self-styled pirate figure tied to the vacation storyline.
A different lane for McGraw. Still very much in the YA space.
The project comes from writer Emily Andras, whose credits include “Wynonna Earp” and “Lost Girl.” Melanie Scrofano, known for acting work on “Wynonna Earp” and directing episodes of “Heartland,” is directing the feature. Blue Ice Pictures is producing, with Andras and Lance Samuels attached as executive producers.
Tubi said “Summer’s Last Resort” is part of the platform’s expanding lineup of youth-focused originals. “With ‘Summer’s Last Resort,’ we’re further expanding our slate of young adult originals,” Tubi chief content officer Adam Lewinson said in the company statement released January 15.
McGraw appeared in New York this week during Fox’s Upfront events as the company highlighted Tubi’s growing original programming slate to advertisers. Getty Images published photos from the afterparty showing McGraw alongside sister Madeleine McGraw and creator Noah Beck following the Fox presentation Monday.
The 15-year-old actor has stacked several genre and streaming projects over the last two years, including “M3GAN 2.0,” “Thunderbolts*” and Mike Flanagan’s “The Life of Chuck.” “Summer’s Last Resort” shifts toward comedy, with Tubi positioning the movie as part of its YA lineup for younger streaming audiences.
A release date for “Summer’s Last Resort” hasn’t been announced.
