Amybeth McNulty Is Still Hoping for an Anne with an E Return on Netflix

Amybeth McNulty hasn’t let go of Anne Shirley. In a clip making the rounds on Instagram this week, taken from a new episode of Nikki Lilly’s podcast Live A Little, the actor said she still feels sad about how Anne with an E ended, and that she is hopeful for another season, or even a movie, to properly close out the story. The clip points to the Change.org petition fans started after the cancellation, which has since climbed past 1.8 million signatures.

McNulty played Anne Shirley for three seasons of Anne with an E, the coming of age drama that streamed on Netflix after airing on CBC in Canada. The series was known for its more grounded, emotionally complex take on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables novels, and it built a devoted fan base before Netflix and CBC cancelled it in November 2019. The ending left several threads hanging, including the story of Ka’kwet, a character created for the series whose arc was never resolved. CBC ultimately confirmed there were no plans to bring the series back.

Since then, McNulty has kept working steadily, most recently as Vickie in the final season of Stranger Things, a casting story TDN covered when it turned out to be tied to the last audition her late parents knew about before their deaths. Vickie’s own ending wound up being left open too, with the Duffer Brothers saying afterward that whether she and Robin stayed together was left intentionally unresolved. It is a striking parallel, two significant roles now, both stories left without a clean finish.

She is not finished with the Anne Shirley world either way. McNulty was announced this past July as part of the cast of Lucy. Maud, a limited series dramatizing the life of Anne of Green Gables author Lucy Maud Montgomery, alongside Megan Follows, who played Anne Shirley in the beloved 1985 miniseries. The project has not yet been picked up by a network or streamer, but it is a fitting reunion between two generations of Anne, even if it is not the Anne with an E follow up so many fans have been hoping for since 2019.

For now, a revival or a wrap up movie is still just a hope. But with McNulty still bringing it up years later, it is clearly not a story she, or her fans, are ready to close the book on.
