Roman Reigns Closes the Book on Seth Rollins as SummerSlam Night 2 Crowns Three New Champions on ESPN

WWE closed out its two night SummerSlam spectacular on Sunday from Minneapolis, and Night 2 turned out to be the kind of show wrestling fans will be talking about for weeks. Streaming live on ESPN in the United States and on Netflix for international viewers, the card delivered a main event that finally put a twelve year rivalry to rest, three separate championship changes, and a surprise return that instantly reshaped WWE’s main event picture.

The night ended with Roman Reigns defending his World Heavyweight Championship against Seth Rollins in a match built entirely around the two men’s shared history as founding members of The Shield. Rollins famously turned on Reigns and their stablemate back in 2014, a betrayal that has quietly haunted their rivalry ever since even as Rollins went on to build his own Hall of Fame worthy career. This time, Reigns pinned Rollins after more than thirty minutes of back and forth storytelling to retain the title, and announcer Michael Cole summed it up perfectly by noting Reigns had finally tied up all his loose ends. It was widely graded as the best match of the entire SummerSlam weekend, and while nobody expects it to be the last time these two lock up, it gave both men and their fans real closure.

Elsewhere on the card, Chad Gable authored one of the most emotional moments of the night by capturing the Intercontinental Championship from Penta in his own hometown. Gable’s road here was a strange and winding one. After losing his masked El Grande Americano persona in a mask versus mask match earlier this year, he re-emerged as himself and earned his shot at Penta through a gauntlet match on Raw. In front of a Minneapolis crowd draped in purple and gold, Gable battled through a targeted shoulder injury before countering a Mexican Destroyer into an ankle lock for the submission win. It marked his first singles championship in a WWE career spanning roughly thirteen years, and he celebrated in the ring surrounded by his family in a genuinely touching scene.

Baron Corbin made his own triumphant return to WWE programming official by dethroning Trick Williams for the United States Championship. Corbin had been teasing his comeback for weeks, and the title match itself came with a chaotic wrinkle courtesy of Trick’s hype man Lil Yachty, whose ringside interference ultimately backfired and sent him crashing through a table. With the referee distracted, Corbin grabbed the title belt, blasted Williams with it, and finished him off with the End of Days for the pin. It is Corbin’s second reign with the United States Championship, and it ends Williams’s run at just over a hundred days, almost certainly setting up a rematch down the road.

The women’s division also got a new titleholder as Chelsea Green outlasted Charlotte Flair, Tiffany Stratton, Jade Cargill, and Lash Legend in a five way ladder match to become the new interim WWE Women’s Champion. It is the first world title of Green’s career, and given how unpredictable ladder matches tend to be, her win capped off a genuinely wild sprint to the finish.

If Night 2 needed a jolt of unpredictability right out of the gate, it got one when Kevin Owens made a surprise return to WWE television after seventeen months away recovering from a neck injury. SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis expanded what was supposed to be a straightforward Finn Balor versus Sami Zayn match into a Fatal 4-Way by adding both Owens and Gunther, and Owens wasted no time reminding everyone why he matters, dropping his longtime rival Zayn with a Stunner to become the new number one contender for CM Punk’s Undisputed WWE Championship. It is an immediate and compelling addition to WWE’s championship picture heading into the fall.

Rounding out the card, Danhausen picked up a win over Dominik Mysterio in a bizarre and appropriately titled Human Monies on a Pole match, complete with interference from the diminutive MiniHausens and a returning JD McDonagh trying to tip the scales in Mysterio’s favor.

Taken together, SummerSlam Night 2 did a lot of heavy lifting for WWE’s ongoing storylines. A rivalry that dates back over a decade finally has closure, three championships changed hands in genuinely satisfying fashion, and a major star’s surprise return has already set the tone for what comes next on the road to WWE’s next big premium live event.
