Warner Bros’ box office hit “Barbie” and HBO’s drama series “Succession” topped the nominations for the 81st Golden Globe Awards, which were announced this morning.
“Barbie” scored nine nominations, the most of any film this year, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. “Succession,” which aired its series finale this year, also earned nine nominations, the most for any TV show.
Other top film nominees include “Oppenheimer” with eight nominations and “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Poor Things” which both earned seven.
On the TV side, HBO’s new series “The Last of Us” scored multiple nominations, including Best TV Drama. Star Pedro Pascal earned a nod for Best Actor in a Drama Series for his acclaimed performance. His co-star Bella Ramsey, who is non-binary, was nominated in the category for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series.
Though Ramsey uses they/them pronouns, the Globes currently only have gendered acting categories.
Several changes were made to the Golden Globes this year after past issues involving membership and representation. New Globe categories include Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television.
The Golden Globe Awards ceremony will air live on CBS on January 7, 2024. Last year’s top winning films included “The Fabelmans” and “The Banshees of Inisherin.” Top TV winners were “House of the Dragon” and “Abbott Elementary.”
