The indie film “Backspot” will be coming to theaters in Spring 2024, starring Devery Jacobs and Evan Rachel Wood. Directed by first-time filmmaker D.W. Waterson, the film explores the world of competitive cheerleading.
“Backspot” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). XYZ Films recently acquired U.S. and Australia/New Zealand distribution rights and plans a theatrical release in 2024.
The film tells the story of an ambitious cheerleader (Jacobs) who faces new challenges when she and her girlfriend join an elite cheer squad led by an intense head coach (Wood).
The cast also includes Wendy Crewson, Shannyn Sossamon, Kudakwashe Rutendo, Thomas Antony Olajide, Noa Diberto, and Olunike Adeliyi. Notable producers include Alona Metzer, D.W. Waterson, Kawennáhere Devery Jacobs and Martin Katz. Elliot Page serves as an executive producer.
“Backspot” was produced with support from Telefilm, Ontario Creates, Crave, CBC, Shaw Rocket Fund and Rogers Telefund. The distribution rights deal was negotiated between XYZ Films and UTA Independent Film Group.
