When the diverse prequel series ‘Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies’ was abruptly axed by Paramount+ in June, in the middle of pride month, fans were understandably outraged. The show, with its empowering themes and loyal following, was unfairly cancelled by the streaming service just two months after its premiere. But now ‘Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies’ is getting a new lease on life through video-on-demand (VOD) platforms.
Starring Marisa Davila, Cheyenne Isabel Wells, Ari Notartomaso, and Tricia Fukuhara, the 10-episode series depicts the rebellious 1950s girls who formed the iconic Pink Ladies gang. As a prequel to the hit musical Grease, it chronicles how the boundary-pushing friends challenged social norms and had fun on their own terms, sparking outrage at Rydell High.
Devoted viewers felt ‘Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies’ never got a fair shake on Paramount+, which only gave a 2-week window after airing the season finale for fans to watch the full 10-episode season together. This outraged the show’s loyal followers who wanted more time to see the diverse cast and themes of inclusion and representation.
Luckily, the cancelled series is now readily available on iTunes, Amazon Prime Video, and other major VOD outlets. The show’s loyal fanbase can now purchase individual episodes or the full season they missed out on during the unfairly short streaming run. This gives ‘Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies’ a chance to finally reach its intended audience after the premature Paramount+ cancellation.
Diehard Grease fans will also appreciate the DVD box set releasing on November 7th, packed with exclusive behind-the-scenes content and cast interviews. This bonus material will provide insights into the making of the cult favorite prequel.
While Paramount+ clearly misfired by pulling the plug after an unjustly brief run, ‘Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies’ now has an opportunity to find its footing through the VOD and DVD releases. New audiences can finally enjoy the magic of this progressive prequel series.
So hold on to those leather jackets, Pink Ladies! Despite an unfairly shortened Paramount+ run, ‘Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies’ is back and ready to show what it can really do with a second chance on VOD. This time, the empowering series can hopefully get the full season attention its loyal fanbase feels it deserves. While the VOD and DVD options are welcomed, this does not excuse Paramount’s poor judgment in severely limiting access to this groundbreaking show.
