Paramount Shuts Down Noggin Streaming Service Amid Company Restructuring

Paramount Global made a surprising announcement this week – they are shutting down Noggin, their preschool-focused streaming service. This move comes as part of a major corporate restructuring that includes significant layoffs across Paramount’s U.S. business units.

Noggin has been a staple in kids entertainment since first launching as a cable channel back in 1999. It transitioned into a streaming platform in 2015, delivering popular preschool content from Nick Jr. like Dora the Explorer, PAW Patrol, Blue’s Clues and more. However, Paramount is now shifting its streaming efforts towards beefing up its flagship services like Paramount+ and Pluto TV.

The shuttering of Noggin signals a strategic pivot for Paramount Global amid ongoing changes in the streaming landscape. While they are stepping back from the kids space, Paramount+ will continue to host Nickelodeon’s Kids & Family content which has proven very popular on that platform.

For parents and caregivers who currently subscribe to Noggin, a transition plan will supposedly be in place as the service eventually winds down. However, this loss of the standalone preschool content hub will be disappointing for many households.

Paramount stated that closing Noggin is part of a cost-cutting move to keep the company financially healthy during a tumultuous time for the media industry. There has been ongoing speculation about potential sales or mergers for Paramount Global. Shutting down smaller niche streamers allows the company to focus on supporting its primary properties.

This exit from the preschool streaming market epitomizes the increasingly competitive and congested nature of the streaming industry. Even large media conglomerates are having to make tough choices when it comes to assessing the long-term viability of their streaming products. For now, Paramount is betting on a more consolidated streaming approach to weather the storm.
