Netflix’s live-action “Eloise” is filming in New York City, with Mae Schenk photographed Tuesday, May 26, in costume as the Plaza Hotel resident from the Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight books.
People reported Tuesday that Schenk was seen in New York wearing a white ruffled blouse, black pleated suspender skirt, knee-high socks, Mary Jane shoes, a blonde wig, and Eloise’s large red bow. Just Jared also published set photos from the same day and reported that Schenk filmed with young co-star Isaac Bae.
The New York shoot gives Netflix’s film a fresh public-facing moment after the streamer confirmed the cast in a January 27 Tudum update. Amy Sherman-Palladino is directing the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Hannah Marks and Linda Woolverton. Sherman-Palladino’s television work includes “Gilmore Girls” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”, but “Eloise” puts her in feature-film territory for Netflix.
Deadline reported in November that Netflix had boarded the MRC film, with Schenk starring as Eloise and Ryan Reynolds playing a newly created villain role. Reynolds is also producing through Maximum Effort with George Dewey, Ashley Fox, and Johnny Pariseau, while Woolverton is also producing. Netflix’s Tudum page lists MRC, Maximum Effort, and HandMade Films among the companies involved.
Sally Hawkins, David Haig, Victor Garber, Max Casella, and Isaac Bae are also in the cast, according to Netflix. The streamer has described the film as a wholly original adventure based on Thompson and Knight’s book series, rather than a direct remake of one earlier screen version.
“It’s an honor to reintroduce this cherished character to the world,” Hannah Minghella, Netflix’s head of Feature Animation and Family Film, said in the Netflix statement.
The project also puts “Eloise” back on screen for the first time since Disney’s 2003 TV movies “Eloise at the Plaza” and “Eloise at Christmastime”. Those films starred Sofia Vassilieva as Eloise and Julie Andrews as Nanny.
Netflix has not announced a release date for “Eloise”, which its Tudum page lists as currently in production.
