Netflix’s new “Little House on the Prairie” has found one of the most recognizable characters from Laura Ingalls Wilder’s world. Willa Dunn has been cast as Nellie Oleson, the famous rival of Laura Ingalls, in Season 2 of the upcoming Netflix adaptation.

The announcement gives longtime fans another major clue about how Netflix plans to expand the series beyond its first season. Season 1, which premieres July 9, follows Laura Ingalls, played by Alice Halsey, along with her family as they leave the Big Woods of Wisconsin and begin a new chapter on the prairie. Luke Bracey plays Charles Ingalls, Crosby Fitzgerald plays Caroline Ingalls, and Skywalker Hughes plays Mary Ingalls.

Nellie Oleson has long been one of the most memorable names connected to “Little House on the Prairie.” In the original television series, Alison Arngrim’s portrayal made Nellie a defining presence for generations of viewers. The character became known as Laura’s spoiled, sharp-tongued rival, but Netflix appears to be setting up a version with more emotional depth.

According to Netflix, this new take on Nellie will still bring plenty of conflict into Laura’s life, but the character will also have a more vulnerable side. The streamer describes her as smart, confident, sharp-tongued, and easily wounded, with a longing for real friendship beneath her difficult exterior. That approach could give the new adaptation room to explore Nellie as more than simply the girl audiences love to dislike.

Dunn is known for previous appearances in projects including “Poker Face,” “Coup!,” “Inside Amy Schumer,” and “Only Murders in the Building,” where she played Little Loretta, the younger version of Meryl Streep’s character. Her casting also comes after Netflix had already renewed “Little House on the Prairie” for Season 2 before the first season’s premiere, showing early confidence in the new version of the classic story.

The new “Little House on the Prairie” is led by showrunner and executive producer Rebecca Sonnenshine, with the series positioned as a fresh adaptation of Wilder’s books rather than a direct remake of the 1970s television series. Netflix has described the show as part family drama, part survival story, and part origin story of the American West.

For fans who grew up with the original series, Nellie’s arrival is likely to be one of the most anticipated parts of the new adaptation. Laura Ingalls’ journey has always been shaped not only by family and frontier challenges, but also by the personalities she meets along the way. With Willa Dunn now stepping into the role, Netflix is preparing to introduce a new generation to one of “Little House on the Prairie’s” most unforgettable characters.
