Netflix has found its Laura Ingalls. The streaming service has cast Alice Halsey in the lead role for its upcoming adaptation of Little House on the Prairie, bringing new life to the classic story based on the books by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
Originally announced in January, the new series promises a fresh interpretation of Wilder’s beloved semi-autobiographical novels. Described as part family drama, part survival tale, and part origin story of the American West, the show will explore the frontier experience through a modern lens while staying rooted in its historical setting.
Halsey takes on the role of Laura Ingalls, a character described as a spirited and complex young girl. According to the series’ official character description, Laura is “a disruptor. Honest to a fault. Questions authority. She’s our window into this adventure. An American icon in waiting.” The description paints her as observant, bold, and fiercely loyal—qualities that set her apart in a world with high stakes for children and few safety nets.
She’s portrayed as a child who doesn’t fit neatly into the expectations of her time. With a love for running barefoot and a habit of challenging adults who are cruel or unjust, Laura’s perspective is central to the series’ narrative. Her deep emotional connection to the world around her and her storytelling nature are highlighted as key traits that will shape how viewers experience the show.
Alice Halsey’s previous credits include appearances on Days of Our Lives, NBC’s revival of Night Court, and a role in Lessons in Chemistry on Apple TV+. She also voiced a character in Disney’s animated series Kindergarten: The Musical.
The series is being led by showrunner and executive producer Rebecca Sonnenshine. Also serving as executive producers are Joy Gorman Wettels, Trip Friendly, Dana Fox, and Susanna Fogel. Sarah Adina Smith will direct the first episode. The production is a collaboration between CBS Studios and Anonymous Content Studios, with Trip Friendly representing Friendly Family Productions. His father, Ed Friendly, was the executive producer behind the original Little House on the Prairie TV series that aired from 1974 to 1983.
The original show continues to resonate with audiences, recently ranking as one of the most-streamed legacy titles with over 13 billion minutes viewed on Peacock last year. With its updated take on a timeless story, the Netflix series looks to capture both the nostalgia of longtime fans and the attention of a new generation.
