Good news for movie lovers! The beloved coming-of-age film “Now and Then” from 1995 is now available to stream for free on Tubi. This heartwarming movie takes viewers back to childhood summers and is an enjoyable watch for anyone who appreciates a nostalgic story about friendship.

Directed by Lesli Linka Glatter, “Now and Then” is set in the 1970s in a small Indiana town. It follows four women as they fondly reminisce about both the fun and challenging adventures of their youth. The narrative seamlessly switches between the women’s past and present, illustrating how their formative childhood experiences shaped them into who they are today. Thanks to Tubi, audiences can now watch this film free of charge.

One of the standout performances is a young Christina Ricci as Roberta, bringing vibrancy and relatability to the role. But there is an intriguing behind-the-scenes fact about the adult Roberta character, played by Rosie O’Donnell. In writer Marlene King’s original conception, Roberta was intended to be portrayed as a lesbian. This was to be highlighted in a scene where gynecologist Roberta assists Rita Wilson’s character during childbirth.

However, when early test audiences reacted poorly to a lesbian character in that role, the filmmakers decided to overhaul Roberta as straight instead. They even added dialogue to make her sexual orientation clear. This change exemplifies the difficulties LGBTQ+ characters faced being represented in mainstream 1990s cinema. It’s interesting to consider how different the film could have been if they retained the original vision for Roberta.

And its availability on Tubi makes revisiting this classic even more enticing. The film provides not just ’90s throwback joy but also a window into how cultural depictions of identity have grown over time.
