After years in development hell, Robert Eggers’ remake of the classic 1922 silent vampire film “Nosferatu” finally has a release date. Focus Features announced this week that the film will hit theaters on December 25, 2024 – a ghoulish Christmas present for horror fans.
Eggers first began working on the project back in 2015 following the success of his directorial debut “The Witch” at Sundance. Several delays and cast changes later, filming wrapped earlier this year. The impressive ensemble includes Bill Skarsgård as the terrifying vampire Count Orlok, as well as Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, and Eggers’ repeat collaborator Willem Dafoe.
In the chilling tale, Skarsgård’s Orlok becomes infatuated with and preys upon Depp’s character Ellen Hutter. It’s a fresh adaptation of F.W. Murnau’s original 1922 silent film, which Eggers has cited as “one of the greatest and most haunting films ever made.” His version promises to be a frightening, atmospheric feast for fans of gothic horror.
“The audacious filmmaking of Robert Eggers is always a gift for fans, and we can promise that his ‘Nosferatu’ is planning quite the Christmas feast,” said Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski about the release date announcement.
Eggers has established himself as an impressive force in horror with acclaimed films like “The Witch,” “The Lighthouse,” and this year’s “The Northman.” His singular, eerie style seems a perfect match to resurrect the legendary vampire Count Orlok. After so many delays, next Christmas can’t come soon enough for fans eagerly anticipating his terrifying vision.
