The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have reached a tentative agreement after months of strained negotiations and strikes. This resolution promises substantial gains and protections for writers and is seen as an achievement for the WGA membership.
The agreement came after long negotiations and concludes just after Yom Kippur. Details remain undisclosed pending review and ratification by the WGA. The strike continues until authorized by the WGA, although picketing has been suspended.
The deal awaits approval by the WGA negotiating committee, board, and council before proceeding to a membership vote. Members may return to work during voting if approved. The WGA expressed solidarity with SAG-AFTRA and requested members not return until SAG-AFTRA also reaches an agreement.
While positive, the industry remains cautious. Late-night and daytime talk shows can likely resume soon but films and scripted TV will stay dark until SAG-AFTRA reaches a deal. The coming days will be pivotal as agreements are finalized and normalcy is sought in the industry.
