The Ghostbusters franchise is ready to spook us once again! Ernie Hudson, who portrays Dr. Winston Zeddemore, confirmed in an interview with Screen Rant that the filming for the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel has concluded.
Hudson revealed, “Yeah, we finished, the movie is done, it’s wrapped. Obviously, they’re editing and doing whatever else.” He also mentioned that Sony might be considering moving the release date from late 2023 to early 2024. The filming faced challenges due to the writers’ strike, but Hudson expressed relief that it’s “done in the can.”
This sequel is a follow-up to 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which itself was a sequel to the 1989 classic, Ghostbusters II. Sony announced the sequel during its CinemaCon 2022 presentation. Gil Kenan, who co-wrote Afterlife with Jason Reitman, has taken the director’s chair for Ghostbusters 4, replacing Reitman. However, Reitman remains involved as a co-writer and producer.
The sequel will see Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace, Paul Rudd, and Carrie Coon reprising their roles as Trevor Spengler, Phoebe Spengler, Gary Grooberson, and Callie Spengler from Afterlife. Principal photography began in London in March 2023 under the codename “Firehouse” and wrapped in June.
But that’s not all! Original cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Annie Potts are also set to return as Dr. Peter Venkman, Dr. Raymond Stantz, and Janine Melnitz, the Ghostbusters secretary. William Atherton, known for his role as the EPA inspector Walter Peck, was spotted on set.
The franchise also welcomes new faces, including Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, James Acaster, Miko Hughes, and Emily Alyn Lind, though their roles remain undisclosed.
While the plot details are still a well-guarded secret, Sony has released a teaser poster featuring the iconic Ghostbusters logo encased in ice. This has led to speculation among fans about what the icy theme could signify.
Ernie Hudson also dropped a hint, revealing that his character Winston has invested “part of his fortune to take Ghostbusting to the next level.” The Spengler family and Gary Grooberson are confirmed to be fully-fledged Ghostbusters in the sequel.
As of now, the Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel is scheduled to hit theaters on December 20, 2023, but keep an eye out as this might change.
