Violet McGraw has spent the last few years cementing her status as a powerhouse in the industry, and we have followed her journey every step of the way. From her breakout emotional performance as young Nell in The Haunting of Hill House to her now-iconic turn as Cady in the M3GAN franchise—including last year’s blockbuster sequel—McGraw has proven she can handle intense, high-stakes drama. Now, she is taking center stage in a project that swaps out supernatural scares for a much more relatable nightmare: a cringe-worthy family vacation.
The news broke today that McGraw will lead the upcoming Tubi Original feature Summer’s Last Resort. Starring alongside Sophia Bush and Jerry O’Connell, McGraw takes on the role of Summer, a high-strung teenager who finds herself in an impossible situation. While Summer might not have a titanium-framed best friend to do her dirty work this time, she is just as protective and determined as the characters we’ve seen McGraw play in the past.
The plot follows Summer as she is forced on a vacation with her free-spirited mother, played by Sophia Bush, and her mother’s new boyfriend, Glenn. In a twist that would make any teenager shudder, Glenn (played by Jerry O’Connell) also happens to be Summer’s vice principal. In true McGraw fashion, her character doesn’t just sit back and take it; she spends the trip plotting to break the couple up to save her own sanity.
It is exciting to see McGraw expanding her range into the YA comedy space. While we’ve seen her tackle massive projects like Marvel’s Black Widow, where she played the young Yelena Belova, and the thriller Separation, seeing her lead a character-driven comedy allows her to lean into a more grounded, Gen Z-focused energy. The film is being directed by Melanie Scrofano and written by Emily Andras, both known for their work on Wynonna Earp, ensuring that the script will have plenty of wit to match McGraw’s talent.
Production is already underway, and with a cast that blends seasoned pros like Bush and O’Connell with one of the most talented young stars in Hollywood, this is definitely one to watch for. Keep checking back for more updates as we get closer to the release of Summer’s Last Resort.
