Violet McGraw has spent the past few years scaring audiences, but this weekend she gets to make them laugh. The M3GAN star leads the new comedy “Summer’s Last Resort,” which premieres Friday, July 3 exclusively on Tubi, where it will stream for free.
McGraw plays Summer, a high-strung teenager whose birthday getaway to a Caribbean resort takes a turn when her free-spirited mom Milly, played by Sophia Bush, invites her new boyfriend Glenn along for the trip. The catch is that Glenn, played by Jerry O’Connell, also happens to be Summer’s vice principal. Convinced the romance is doomed, Summer hatches a secret plan to break the couple up, and her scheming spirals into a week of sunburns, sabotage and unexpected feelings. The vacation chaos includes inflatable bubble-ball battles, botched matchmaking attempts and even an emergency dolphin rescue.
The film marks a deliberate change of pace for McGraw, who audiences last saw in “M3GAN 2.0” and who has built an impressive resume across “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Black Widow” and “Thunderbolts.” Speaking with Hollywood Life ahead of the premiere, she called the project a milestone. “This was my first comedy, which was really exciting for me,” McGraw said. She admitted to some nerves going in, but said that her love for the character and the atmosphere on set with Bush and O’Connell put her at ease.
O’Connell, for his part, told the outlet he found his inspiration close to home, drawing on life with his own teenage daughters to figure out exactly how a well-meaning adult can embarrass a teen to the maximum degree. Both actors also recalled spending an entire day filming in a chilly dolphin pool, goosebumps and all.
Behind the camera, “Summer’s Last Resort” reunites the “Wynonna Earp” creative team of director Melanie Scrofano and writer Emily Andras, with Blue Ice Pictures, the company behind “Ginny & Georgia,” producing. Tim Rozon and Clara Alexandrova round out the cast. Andras executive produces alongside Lance Samuels.
For McGraw fans, this one is an easy watch. It arrives Friday, it costs nothing, and it shows a side of the actress we have not seen before.
