Ryan Kiera Armstrong Joins Sarah Michelle Gellar in Hulu’s New ‘Buffy’ Reboot as the Next Generation Slayer

Nearly two decades after Buffy the Vampire Slayer concluded, a new chapter in the beloved franchise is officially taking shape at Hulu—with a familiar face leading the charge and a rising star joining the fight.

In an emotional moment shared on Instagram, Sarah Michelle Gellar, who originated the role of Buffy Summers, introduced 15-year-old Ryan Kiera Armstrong as her co-star in the upcoming reboot. The heartfelt video captures Gellar personally inviting Armstrong to be “the chosen one” in the new iteration of the series.

“How do you feel about helping me save the world?” Gellar asks in the clip. Armstrong, visibly moved, accepts the invitation through tears, responding with an enthusiastic “yes.”

Fans of Armstrong may recognize her from her earlier lead role in Firestarter—which was previously featured here on Trevor Decker News—as well as her appearances in Anne with an E and American Horror Story. Her casting marks a significant milestone in the reboot’s development, as she becomes the first new actor publicly confirmed to join the series.

The upcoming series is being developed by Hulu with a creative team that includes Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao, who will direct and executive produce the pilot. Writers Nora and Lila Zuckerman are on board as showrunners and executive producers. Gellar herself will also serve as an executive producer, alongside original producers Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton, who returns through her production company Sandollar Entertainment.

In her Instagram caption, Gellar praised Armstrong’s performance, calling her “the only girl” she envisioned for the role after seeing her audition. “To have that kind of emotional intelligence, and talent, at such a young age is truly a gift,” she wrote, also welcoming her to “New Sunnydale,” a nod to the fictional town central to the original series.

The reboot has not yet been given an official title, but filming is expected to begin soon. The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer remains available to stream on Hulu.
