Hulu has announced the upcoming release of a new documentary titled Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara. Directed by true-crime filmmaker Erin Lee Carr, the film is set to premiere on October 18. The documentary examines a complex catfishing plot that affected fans of the Canadian indie rock duo, Tegan and Sara.

In 2011, Tegan Quin’s personal computer files were hacked, leading to a series of manipulative actions that impacted their community. Tegan and Sara Quin, known for their evolution from folky indie rock to synth-driven dance tracks and mainstream pop, have built a dedicated following. This documentary explores the events following the hacking incident.

Hulu’s press release describes the film as an “intimate yet sprawling story” that reveals how Tegan’s identity was stolen and used to deceive their fans, resulting in mistrust, anxiety, and self-doubt.

Fanatical is produced by Story Syndicate and Carr Lot Productions. The film features Tegan enlisting the help of documentary filmmaker Erin Lee Carr, known for her work on Britney vs. Spears and Mommy Dead and Dearest, to identify the person behind this scheme.

The documentary includes Tegan’s narration, accounts from deceived fans, and communications between the fake Tegan and their victims. It also features behind-the-scenes archives of the band, combining elements of mystery and investigation.

Tegan and Sara’s impact on the music scene is notable. They released their debut album Under Feet Like Ours in 1999 and have since produced nine additional studio albums. Their accolades include a Grammy nomination for the video album Get Along and a performance at the 2015 Oscars for “Everything Is Awesome” from The Lego Movie. They are also authors of the memoir High School, which was adapted into a TV series that Trevor Decker News extensively covered.

The documentary’s executive producers include Tegan Quin and Sara Quin, alongside Dan Cogan, Liz Garbus, Jon Bardin, and Kate Barry from Story Syndicate. Producers Elyssa Hess and Jenny Eliscu also contribute to this project.
