The television series “High School,” inspired by Tegan and Sara Quin’s memoir, has been officially canceled by Freevee after just one season. This comes as disappointing news to fans who were eager for more episodes.
According to reports, including confirmation from TVLine, the decision came despite initial strong support from Amazon executives. Showrunner Clea Duvall had even led a mini writers’ room to develop the second season’s scripts, which were fully completed. However, the completion rate for the first season’s eight episodes was not sufficient to secure a renewal.
Premiering in October 2022, “High School” was released weekly and explored the themes of self-identity through the lens of twin sisters Tegan and Sara. Set in the vibrant 1990s grunge and rave scene, the series showcased the parallel and often contrasting experiences of the twins, played by TikTok creators Railey and Seazynn Gilliland. The show also featured performances by Cobie Smulders and Kyle Bornheimer as the twins’ parents, Simone and Patrick, adding depth to the family dynamics portrayed.
Here at Trevor Decker News, we enjoyed covering this series and were hopeful for quite a while that there would be a second season. We’re disappointed that there isn’t one because the series was left on a cliffhanger. Of course, Tegan and Sara have such a great story, and the representation is so important. While “High School” may have ended prematurely, its impact on viewers and fans of Tegan and Sara remains. The series offered a nostalgic journey through the 90s while tackling themes of identity and self-discovery, resonating with many who watched it.
