Canadian indie pop duo Tegan and Sara posted a touching tribute to iconic Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor, who passed away this week at age 56.
In an Instagram post, Tegan and Sara shared footage from an O’Connor concert in February 2020 and expressed the “absolutely massive impact” the singer had on them throughout their lives.
They called seeing O’Connor perform live a “lifelong dream” and said they “sang our hearts out” at the show, which took place just one month prior to the start of COVID-19 lockdowns.
In the caption, Tegan and Sara wrote: “This was the last concert we saw in Feb 2020. A month later we went into lockdown. Lifelong dream to see her, and we sang our hearts out. Can’t express what an absolutely massive impact Sinead O’Connor had on us from childhood through adulthood. Her voice, her brain, her bravery.”
The post highlights the immense influence O’Connor had on the musical and personal development of Tegan and Sara. They pointed to her “voice, brain, and bravery” as key sources of inspiration throughout their lives.
O’Connor’s song “The Last Day of Our Acquaintance” was also featured prominently on the finale episode of Tegan and Sara’s coming-of-age drama series “High School” on Amazon Freevee.
The emotional social media tribute demonstrates just how much O’Connor meant to Tegan and Sara, both as musicians and as strong female voices within the industry. They, like countless others, are grieving the immense loss of the iconic singer who never shied away from speaking her truth.
