Music enthusiasts, take note: The Eurovision Song Contest is set to make its third consecutive appearance on Peacock, the streaming service by NBCUniversal. The contest is slated to begin on May 9, offering both live and on-demand viewing options to accommodate various viewer schedules.
The first semi-final of the competition will take place on May 9 at 3 p.m. ET, with the second semi-final following on May 11 at the same time. The grand finale will air live on May 13 at 3 p.m. ET.
In a new development for this year’s competition, Eurovision superfan and two-time Olympian Johnny Weir, currently serving as a figure skating analyst for NBC Sports, will host a special “Watch With Live” on Peacock during the Grand Final. This feature, a recent addition to Peacock’s services, allows viewers to interact with Weir and ask questions during the stream.
The Eurovision Song Contest has had a varied history in the U.S. Originally, the contest was broadcast live on ViacomCBS’ Logo, but only the final was shown from 2016-2018. Following this, Netflix picked up U.S. VOD rights for the 2019 contest in Tel Aviv and continued to do so for the 2020 contest, which was ultimately canceled due to the pandemic.
The Eurovision Song Contest, an annual event since 1956, has played a key role in launching the careers of several international artists, including ABBA, Olivia Newton-John, and Celine Dion. It is renowned for its eclectic mix of catchy tunes, powerful ballads, and vibrant stage shows complete with pyrotechnics, CGI, and extravagant costumes. As the world’s largest non-sporting live TV event, it garners almost 200 million viewers worldwide, making it the most-watched live entertainment program in Europe.
