Rogue’s Southern drawl is half the character, and Inde Navarrette is already practicing. A new piece from The Hollywood Reporter, drawn from the magazine’s Awards Chatter podcast conversation with the actress, leads with the accent: the magazine says she let a little of Rogue’s Southern lilt slip while talking about the role, down to a playful “Sugar!” Navarrette plays Rogue, the mutant born Anna Marie, in Marvel’s upcoming X-Men movie.
The voice is only part of the homework. On the podcast, she talked about what the role itself gives her: “with acting comes the freedom of being a completely different person, one of those people being Rogue, Anna Marie.” She spoke about paying homage to the character and the Marvel writers behind her, and about “adding my own sauce” to what director Jake Schreier and his team are building. Navarrette walked through that approach in detail earlier this month, and the accent tease is the newest piece of it to surface.
The cast around her gives the reboot serious weight. Sadie Sink plays Jean Grey, with Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Maya Boyd as Storm, Asa Germann as Angel and Adam Driver as the villain Mr. Sinister.
It is the latest headline in a crowded stretch for the Obsession star. Navarrette took home the Critics Choice Breakthrough Award earlier this month, and she hosts Saturday Night Live‘s Halloween episode on October 31. Beyond Marvel, she will next star in and executive produce The Waffle House Index, a science fiction thriller from Apple Original Films.
