Sixteen years after Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam closed out one of Disney Channel’s most beloved franchises, the music is back. Disney released a new teaser trailer for Camp Rock 3 on Wednesday, and it arrived with two major announcements: the movie will premiere Thursday, August 13 on Disney Channel before hitting Disney+ the following day, and the film’s first single, “One Beat Away,” is available now on all major music streaming platforms.
The teaser wastes no time reestablishing the world fans remember. Joe Jonas, Nick Jonas, and Kevin Jonas return as Shane, Nate, and Jason Gray, the members of fictional boy band Connect 3, who roll back into Camp Rock in a vintage red sports car flanked by security SUVs. The brothers have a massive 30-city sold-out reunion tour on the books and one glaring problem: they just lost their opening act. Their solution is to return to the camp where it all began and discover the next big thing themselves.
That premise sets up the heart of the movie, a new generation of campers competing for the chance to open for their favorite band. Leading the pack is Sage, played by Liamani Segura, a bold and determined performer who declares in the teaser that nothing is going to throw her off her game, right before she is promptly knocked to the ground by camp bad boy Fletch, played by Malachi Barton. The teaser also delivers a moment guaranteed to hit longtime fans right in the nostalgia: Sage discovers an old songbook that belonged to Mitchie Torres, the character Demi Lovato played in the first two films.
Lovato is not currently set to appear on camera, though she is deeply involved behind the scenes as an executive producer alongside the Jonas Brothers, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series creator Tim Federle, Betsy Sullenger, Spencer Berman, and Gary Marsh. Maria Canals-Barrera does return in front of the camera as Connie Torres, Mitchie’s mom and the camp’s beloved chef. Naturally, fans are already speculating about a surprise Lovato cameo, but Disney has announced nothing on that front.
The rest of the new class of campers includes Hudson Stone as Sage’s easygoing brother Desi, Lumi Pollack as cello prodigy Rosie, Casey Trotter as drummer Cliff, Brooklynn Pitts as choreo queen Callie, and Ava Jean as intimidating influencer Madison. Sherry Cola joins as Lark, who is sent to Camp Rock to help prepare the campers vying for the opening slot. According to the official synopsis, the competition leads to unexpected alliances, revelations, and romances as tensions rise and friendships are tested.
Veronica Rodriguez directs from a script by Eydie Faye, with choreography from Jamal Sims. Music remains the franchise’s beating heart, and Disney has confirmed the new film will feature songs from the original movies and past Connect 3 performances alongside its new material. “One Beat Away,” performed by Segura and the cast, anchors the teaser and offers the first taste of the soundtrack, which arrives digitally on August 13 with a vinyl edition to follow. The film shot in Vancouver from September through November of last year.
The original Camp Rock premiered in 2008 and Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam followed in 2010, and both rank among the top ten Disney Channel Original Movies of all time. If the teaser is any indication, Disney is betting the franchise still has plenty of gas in the tank, and a whole new generation is one beat away from finding out.
