The countdown to the end of an era is reaching a fever pitch as the Stranger Things series finale prepares to take over the big screen. Series creators the Duffer Brothers recently shared that the theatrical event has significantly expanded to meet the massive demand from fans. Originally planned for around 350 locations, the finale will now be shown in over 620 theaters across the United States and Canada.

This special event is proving to be a massive success before the first frame even flickers on screen. More than 1.1 million fans have already secured their RSVPs, and over 3,500 showtimes are completely full. While many locations are sold out, some spots remain in major cities like Los Angeles, though they are filling up fast. Fans are eager to witness the 2-hour and 5-minute conclusion to the Hawkins saga in a communal setting.

Because of the unique nature of this release, these aren’t traditional ticketed screenings. To navigate talent residual complications, theaters are charging a reservation fee that is then converted into a voucher for snacks and drinks. This means the success of the theatrical run will be measured in admissions rather than traditional box office revenue. Even with a very short window—running from 5 PM PT on New Year’s Eve through New Year’s Day—the numbers are rivaling major anime and event film releases.

The Duffer Brothers expressed their excitement about closing out this ten-year journey alongside the fans. They even hinted that they might drop into a Los Angeles theater to watch the finale themselves. For those who can’t make it to a theater, the final chapter will be available to stream globally on Netflix at the exact same time the screenings begin. It is a bittersweet moment for fans everywhere as we prepare to say goodbye to these beloved characters one last time.
