Alyson Court Reflects on Playing Loonette the Clown, Balancing Fame and Motherhood

For many, The Big Comfy Couch remains a cherished memory from childhood, and Alyson Court, the face behind Loonette the Clown, recently opened up about her incredible journey with the iconic Canadian children’s series. Starting as a teenager in 1992, Court played Loonette through the show’s original run until 1996, then returned for a final season in 2002—filmed while she was six months pregnant.

Looking back, Court shared fond memories of the early days, from enduring sweltering studio conditions to bonding with her castmates. Despite initially viewing the role as “just a job,” interacting with fans helped her realize the impact of Loonette and the show’s enduring legacy. By the time her son Blaede arrived, she saw the character as a symbol of love and connection, which motivated her to continue the role during her pregnancy.

Court also revealed how motherhood deepened her appreciation for the charitable work she began during her time as Loonette. Organizations like Dreams Take Flight allowed her to make a difference in the lives of children facing challenges, experiences she describes as life-changing.

Even after retiring the clown nose, Court continues to feel the love from fans. “It’s been feeding my soul,” she said, recounting moments when adults transform into giddy children during meet-and-greets. Her son, now grown, has a unique perspective on her fame. While initially reluctant to acknowledge her celebrity status, he now appreciates her work, especially her contributions to the animated Scott Pilgrim series.

Court’s journey as Loonette is a testament to the enduring magic of The Big Comfy Couch and the lasting impact of children’s programming. Whether bringing smiles to fans or supporting meaningful causes, Court’s legacy as Loonette continues to inspire generations.
