Jenna Ortega takes on the role of a promising writer and Martin Freeman plays her teacher in the upcoming relationship drama Miller’s Girl.

As shown in the recently released trailer, Ortega’s character Cairo becomes entwined with Freeman’s instructor character Jonathan Miller, suggesting a problematic student-teacher dynamic.

Miller pointedly questions Cairo, “Why did you write this? This is inappropriate.” She fires back, “You said to ‘write what you know.'” The trailer also shows Miller worrying about potential consequences if “she can convince them that something happened between us.”

Writer-director Jade Halley Bartlett marks her feature debut with the project, based on a script featured on 2016’s Black List.

Lionsgate will debut Miller’s Girl on January 26, following its film festival premiere in Palm Springs. Dagmara Domińczyk, Bashir Salahuddin, and Gideon Adlon co-star.

Ortega currently stars as the lead in Netflix’s hit series Wednesday, while Freeman has recently appeared in shows like Secret Invasion and the UK Office.

Spotlighting a morally questionable student-teacher relationship, Miller’s Girl promises to be a complex drama anchored by Ortega and Freeman’s standout performances, as previewed in the trailer.
