Folk, country, and bluegrass singer EmiSunshine has released “The Boy I Never Loved” as the first single and music video off her upcoming bluegrass album “Sideshow.” This melancholy new song shows EmiSunshine taking on the perspective of a woman scorned when her former love moves on.
In the lyrics, she sings “the boy I’ll never love will never say a thing about the little fair-haired baby with eyes of Knoxville green.”
Co-written with EmiSunshine’s mother Alisha Hamilton and acclaimed Americana songwriter Leslie Satcher, “The Boy I Never Loved” showcases EmiSunshine’s maturity as a 19-year-old artist. Known for impressing audiences since first appearing on NBC’s Today Show at age 9 and more recently on American Idol, she brings raw emotion and vocal power to this scorned woman’s tale.
Backed by sparse bluegrass instrumentation of ukulele, bass, percussion, mandolin, guitar, banjo, and fiddle, EmiSunshine’s voice rings clear over the mix. This simple folk-inspired arrangement allows the heartbreak in the lyrics to shine through.
Though fictional, EmiSunshine drew inspiration from real-life experiences of love and heartbreak. As she stated, “We hit on this idea of a man who’s marrying the wrong girl. The woman he loves is fierce and full of fire, but due to family issues he can’t acknowledge her.”
Fans can view the new “The Boy I Never Loved” music video above and look forward to hearing the full bluegrass album “Sideshow” coming out October 6th. For those who have followed EmiSunshine from her early days performing classic country on national television to writing her own folk-inspired gems, this new release shows her continued growth into a promising singer-songwriter.
