In a recent interview, actor Michael Keaton revealed that the sequel to the 1988 classic “Beetlejuice” is in the works and will be produced in a manner that closely mirrors the original film. Keaton, who is reprising his role in the sequel, shared his enthusiasm for the project and the creative process behind it.
“Beetlejuice is the most fun you can have working,” Keaton told Empire. “We’re doing it exactly like we did the first movie.” He went on to describe the hands-on, improvisational approach that characterized the production of the first film, emphasizing that the sequel will maintain this spirit.
The sequel, directed by Tim Burton, is slated for release on September 6, 2024. Keaton and Winona Ryder, another original cast member, will be returning for the sequel. Newcomer Jenna Ortega, who previously collaborated with Burton on “Wednesday,” will also join the cast. The screenplay for “Beetlejuice 2” is being written by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the creators of the Netflix “Addams Family” series.
Keaton, who is also set to return as Batman in the upcoming film “The Flash,” expressed his commitment to preserving the integrity of the original films when reprising classic roles. He shared that he and Burton had discussed the possibility of a “Beetlejuice” sequel years ago, agreeing that if it were to happen, it would need to be done in a way that closely resembled the original production.
“It’s the most fun I’ve had working on a movie in — I can’t tell you how long,” Keaton said, expressing his excitement for the project.
