Jenna Ortega, known for her captivating performance as Wednesday in the Netflix series, continues to make waves in Hollywood with her upcoming role in Tim Burton’s highly anticipated sequel, “Beetlejuice 2.” In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Ortega shared her enthusiasm for the project and explained why she believes this sequel is exactly what the younger generation needs.
A Love for the Original “Beetlejuice”
Ortega, who takes on the role of Astrid Deetz, daughter of Lydia Deetz (played by Winona Ryder), revealed her long-standing admiration for the original 1988 film. She reminisced about her first encounter with “Beetlejuice” at a friend’s house and how the film’s unique characters and storyline captivated her even before she had watched it in full. “I had always loved the movie,” she said. “Before I’d even seen the movie, I knew who Beetlejuice was. I knew who Lydia was. I was able to recognize costumes just because it was everywhere.”
The Value of Unique and Unconventional Stories
Ortega expressed her excitement about bringing back Michael Keaton’s iconic character in a time when Hollywood is saturated with sequels and reboots aimed at box office success. She emphasized the importance of revisiting “weird, strange, off-putting stories” to engage the younger generation. “We need to introduce the younger generation that’s always on the phone to new artistic and creative ideas,” she stated. “The weirder you get with it, the more people you can get to see it.”
A Reunion of Iconic Characters
Joining the original cast, including Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara, Ortega sees “Beetlejuice 2” as a bridge between generations. She highlighted the film’s potential to reconnect fans with the beloved characters while introducing a new audience to its quirky charm. Reflecting on her role, Ortega described her character as “weird, but in a different way,” and hinted at the dynamic relationship between Astrid and Lydia, which plays a crucial part in the sequel’s storyline.
Looking Ahead to “Beetlejuice 2”
As anticipation builds for the film’s release on September 6, Ortega’s reflections provide a glimpse into why “Beetlejuice 2” holds a special place in her heart. Her insights underscore the significance of bringing creative, unconventional stories back to the forefront of cinema, offering both nostalgia for longtime fans and fresh intrigue for new viewers.
