The upcoming Broadway revival of the beloved musical “The Wiz” has announced its initial casting. The trio of stars includes Kyle Ramar Freeman as the Lion, Phillip Johnson Richardson as the Tinman, and Avery Wilson as the Scarecrow. The production, directed by Schele Williams and choreographed by JaQuel Knight, is set to arrive on Broadway in 2024 at a yet-to-be-announced venue.
This production will mark the Broadway debuts of Richardson, known for his work on Apple TV’s “Sharper,” and Wilson, a former contestant on NBC’s “The Voice.” Freeman, who will be playing the Lion, made his Main Stem debut in the Tony Award-winning “A Strange Loop.” The casting for the revival is being handled by Tara Rubin.
“The Wiz” is set to launch a national tour from Baltimore’s Hippodrome Theatre from September 23-30, 2023. Additional tour stops will be announced in due course.
The musical, which features a book by William F. Brown and a score by Charlie Smalls, will include additional material for the revival provided by Amber Ruffin. The music supervision, orchestrations, and music arrangements will be handled by Joseph Joubert.
The revival is being produced by Kristin Caskey, Mike Isaacson, Brian Anthony Moreland, and the Ambassador Theatre Group.
