Netflix is starting the year with some staggering numbers that prove it is still the undisputed king of the streaming world. The company recently revealed that it surpassed 325 million paid subscribers by the end of last year, meaning their global audience is now closing in on a billion people. With hits like the final season of Stranger Things and live NFL games drawing in massive crowds, the streamer is showing no signs of slowing down.

To keep that momentum going, Netflix is opening its wallet wider than ever. The company plans to spend a whopping $20 billion on content this year. This isn’t just for their own original series; they are also doubling down on licensed content. Thanks to new deals with Universal and Sony, as well as a partnership with Paramount Skydance, subscribers can expect a much wider variety of blockbuster films and fan-favorite TV shows like SEAL Team and Mayor of Kingstown to pop up in their feeds.

The biggest shockwave in the industry, however, remains Netflix’s aggressive pursuit of Warner Bros. Discovery. In a move to block a hostile takeover attempt by Paramount Skydance, Netflix has shifted to a massive $83 billion all-cash offer to acquire the home of HBO and DC Comics. While some in Hollywood worry about one company having that much power, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos is promising to keep the magic of the big screen alive by maintaining a 45-day theatrical window for Warner Bros. films. It is a bold new era for entertainment, and Netflix is clearly playing to win.
