Netflix has officially unleashed the final trailer for the monumental series finale of Stranger Things, setting the stage for a massive showdown between Eleven and the dark forces of the Upside Down. Titled “The Rightside Up,” the eighth and final episode of Season 5 is scheduled to premiere tomorrow, December 31, at 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET.
The newly released footage, which Netflix is calling “one last trailer,” offers a deeply emotional look at the stakes facing our heroes. It begins with a tearful Jim Hopper delivering a powerful pep talk to Eleven, urging her to fight for a life beyond the horrors she has endured since childhood. The trailer teases the execution of “Operation Beanstalk,” a high-stakes plan to lure Vecna into a trap by drawing the two worlds together, allowing Eleven to enter his mind while the rest of the gang ventures into the Abyss to rescue kidnapped children.
This finale is set to be a cinematic event in every sense of the word. Not only will it conclude nearly a decade of storytelling on Netflix, but it is also heading to the big screen. The final episode has a confirmed runtime of two hours and five minutes and will play in more than 600 theaters across the United States and Canada starting New Year’s Eve.
The build-up to this trailer was just as spectacular as the show itself. On Sunday, Netflix took over the Las Vegas Strip with a record-breaking drone show featuring 5,000 drones and pyrotechnics. Jamie Campbell Bower, who plays the villainous Vecna, made a surprise appearance at the event, reminding fans that the monster is not finished with Hawkins just yet.
As the town of Hawkins remains under military lockdown and the Rifts continue to bleed into our world, the final chapter promises a definitive end to the saga. Whether everyone makes it out alive remains the biggest question on every fan’s mind as we approach the final hours of the year.
