Get ready, fans, because the highly anticipated sequel, M3GAN 2.0, is now in theaters, and it’s bringing a fresh musical moment that aims to be as iconic as the original’s “Titanium” scene. This time, the upgraded M3GAN trades Sia for a classic, performing Kate Bush’s haunting 1988 track, “This Woman’s Work.”
Director Gerard Johnstone revealed in an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly that the song choice was deeply tied to the evolving narrative. Originally, a different song was considered, but as the script shifted to focus on Allison Williams’ character, Gemma, and her struggles with being a mother, “This Woman’s Work” became the perfect fit.
The sequel picks up two years after the events of the first film. Gemma is now a vocal advocate for governmental AI regulation, facing off against AMELIA, a new killer robot built from stolen M3GAN blueprints. To combat this new threat, Gemma brings M3GAN back in a new, improved body.
Johnstone shared that “This Woman’s Work” beat out about five other contenders for its unique opening, despite not having the instant recognition of “Titanium.” Producer James Wan added that the success of the first M3GAN film significantly helped in securing the music rights, noting that the franchise is a “fun platform for people to want to come and play with us on.”
It sounds like M3GAN 2.0 is ready to deliver another unforgettable, musically-charged performance from everyone’s favorite killer doll. This film is a must-see for fans of the franchise.
