Mike Flanagan, the acclaimed showrunner steering Prime Video’s highly anticipated Carrie series, has offered a glimpse into the rigorous casting process and his excitement for Summer Howell in the lead role. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere of his new film, The Life of Chuck (his latest collaboration with Carrie author Stephen King), Flanagan revealed the exhaustive search: “I think we looked at 1,800 different candidates for that role,” he said, calling it “an exhaustive process.”
This meticulous selection aims to find the perfect embodiment of Carrie White, a character famously portrayed by Sissy Spacek in the iconic 1976 film and later by Chloe Grace Moretz in the 2013 remake. Other actresses who have taken on the role include Angela Bettis in a 2002 TV movie and Emily Bergl in the 1999 sequel, The Rage: Carrie 2. Flanagan expressed immense confidence in their choice, stating, “I think we ended up with the right actor for the part… It took a long time to find her, and I can’t wait for people to see what she’s doing, because it’s unlike anything that anyone’s ever done with the part before.” For more insights into the series’ development and casting, you can read the full interview from The Hollywood Reporter.
In addition to Howell, Prime Video has announced Samantha Sloyan will star as Carrie’s domineering mother, Margaret White, marking another collaboration with Flanagan following projects like Gerald’s Game and The Fall of the House of Usher. The partial cast list also includes Alison Thornton, Thalia Dudek, Siena Agudong, Amber Midthunder, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, Joel Oulette, and Matthew Lillard. Flanagan hinted at more cast members to be announced, noting, “That’s a partial list… There are a number more who are waiting in the wings to be announced.” With shooting set to begin in two weeks, Flanagan admits he’s “very tired, but very excited to get back to it.” Prime Video has described the series as a “bold and timely reimagining” of King’s classic narrative about a high schooler dealing with bullies while discovering her telekinetic powers.
