Disney, ESPN, and NHL to Air First-Ever Live, Animated Hockey Game

Get ready for the first-ever live, animated hockey game! On March 14th at 7pm ET/PT, Disney Channel, ESPN, and the NHL will air the “NHL Big City Greens Classic,” which will feature the Washington Capitals vs. New York Rangers in a groundbreaking event that combines sports and animation. This event will showcase real-time volumetric animation of players and teams modeled after characters on the Disney show “Big City Greens.”

The NHL Big City Greens Classic aims to introduce hockey to a new audience, particularly younger viewers, and promote the sport through technology and creative collaboration. NHL Edge positioning data will be used to recreate the action on the ice, with Big City Greens characters skating alongside animated versions of the NHL players. The telecast will air on ESPN+, Disney Channel, Disney XD, and Disney+, while the main telecast will be available on ESPN and ESPN+.

Viewers can expect a unique and entertaining hockey experience that combines sports and animation, as the NHL and Disney are creating a new fan experience for younger audiences. The real-time animation will be produced in association with ESPN Edge Innovation Center and NHL EDGE Innovation partners Verizon, Beyond Sports, and Silver Spoon. NHL commentators will call the action, while the voice actors from Big City Greens, including Shane and Chris Houghton and Marieve Herington, will also be featured.
