The underdog story behind Rocky is on the big screen at last. I Play Rocky opened today in select theaters in Los Angeles, New York and Philadelphia, the first stop in a rollout that adds more theaters next Friday, November 13, before the film opens everywhere November 20. Tickets are on sale now.
Amazon MGM Studios marked the opening with a batch of new clips, including a tense negotiation scene titled “We Can’t Make a Deal with Sylvester Spillane” and a longer scene pairing Anthony Ippolito with AnnaSophia Robb as Sasha Czack. The new footage also features Tracy Letts, with P.J. Byrne as producer Irwin Winkler and Toby Kebbell as producer Robert Chartoff, the men holding the fate of Stallone’s script.
The studio’s new “First Look” featurette goes behind the scenes on the making of the film, the true story of an unknown actor who was told no at every turn and refused to sell his Rocky script unless he could star in it himself, betting everything on the part he wrote.

I Play Rocky is directed by Academy Award winner Peter Farrelly and written by Peter Gamble. Ippolito stars as Sylvester Stallone, with Robb, Kebbell, Byrne and Jay Duplass alongside Kiki Seto, featuring Matt Dillon with Stephan James and Letts.
The opening caps a busy stretch for the film on this site, from its first clip and second trailer in October to the cast’s New York screening on Wednesday. More theaters join the run next Friday, and the film is everywhere November 20.
