Sophia Anne Caruso to Star in New Off Broadway Musical Adaptation of Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen

Sophia Anne Caruso, the actor who originated the role of Lydia Deetz in Broadway’s Beetlejuice, is set to lead a new stage musical adaptation of Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, Deadline reports. The show marks the first time a manga has been developed into an American musical in the English language, adapting Moyoco Anno’s graphic novel with music and lyrics by Tony and Grammy winner Duncan Sheik.

The production will be directed and choreographed by Rob Ashford and will premiere at a brand new Off Broadway venue in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, taking over the space that long housed the immersive hit Sleep No More. The venue has been christened The Night Egg at the Culture Club, named after the club at the center of Anno’s story. Performances begin Friday, September 25, with opening night set for Thursday, October 15, and the run continues through Sunday, January 3, 2027.

Caruso will play Colette, described in the show’s synopsis as a witty young dreamer in early 20th century Paris who finds her power through writing. While working at the elusive maison close called Night Egg, Colette begins chronicling the fantasies, confessions and private sorrows of her clients, slowly transforming herself from object to observer as she turns their perversions into art. But she’s fighting her own pull toward self-destruction, in the form of a lingering, toxic attachment to her childhood love, Leon.

It’s a meaty role for Caruso, who has spent years building a stage resume that includes Grey House on Broadway and Off Broadway and West End runs of David Bowie’s Lazarus, along with The Nether Off Broadway. On screen, she starred in Netflix’s The School for Good and Evil opposite Charlize Theron and Kerry Washington.

The creative team announced alongside the casting is stacked with Tony pedigree: three time winner Scott Pask on scenic design, eight time winner Catherine Zuber on costumes, Brian Tovar on lighting, winner Cody Spencer on sound, and Tom Watson on hair and wigs. The book is by Leah Nanako Winkler, with music supervision and arrangements from Or Matias. Kenny Kurokawa, Rayman and Antonio Marion are producing.
