Ronda Rousey defeated Gina Carano by first-round armbar Saturday night on Netflix, ending the “Rousey vs. Carano” main event in 17 seconds at Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California.
The fight headlined Most Valuable Promotions’ first MMA card on Netflix and paired two women whose careers helped force women’s MMA into bigger arenas, larger broadcasts, and better business conversations. CBS Sports listed the result as Rousey defeating Carano by first-round submission, while MMA Fighting reported the official time as 0:17 of Round 1.
It was fast. Very fast.
According to MMA Fighting’s live blog, Rousey shot in immediately, took Carano to the mat, moved into mount, and attacked the armbar before Carano tapped. The sequence looked familiar to anyone who followed Rousey’s first run, when her judo and armbars made her the UFC’s first female champion and helped make women’s bouts viable as pay-per-view headliners.
Carano’s night ended quickly, but the moment still carried weight because of what she represented before the UFC ever built a women’s division around Rousey. Carano last fought in 2009 against Cris Cyborg in Strikeforce, a bout that helped prove women’s MMA could headline a major card and draw attention on a national stage. By the time Rousey arrived in the sport, Carano had already helped widen the lane.
That respect was clear after the fight. “You changed my world and we changed the world,” Rousey said, according to MMA Fighting, after calling Carano the person who brought her into MMA.
Carano was disappointed that the fight ended before she could get much offense started. Still, she did not frame the night only by the result. “I have so much love and respect for her,” Carano said after the fight. “This is a victory in my life.”
The Netflix card leaned hard on that history. Rousey had not fought in MMA since 2016, when her UFC run ended after losses to Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes. Carano had been away even longer, stepping back from competition after the Cyborg fight in 2009 and later becoming better known to many viewers for film and television work.
Their returns were not built like a standard contender fight. Reuters reported before the event that Rousey and Carano were also looking at the bout as a possible bridge to future entertainment opportunities, including a martial arts film with Netflix. Rousey said at a Los Angeles press conference that her definition of greatness in cage fighting was “making history, having a cultural impact and influencing the future of the sport.”
That is why the result feels bigger than the 17 seconds it took to settle. Rousey got the win, and she got it in the exact way that made her one of the most recognizable athletes in combat sports. Carano, even in defeat, stood across from her as one of the women who helped make a stage like this possible.
Netflix’s main card also featured Mike Perry defeating Nate Diaz by second-round TKO, Francis Ngannou knocking out Philipe Lins in the first round, Salahdine Parnasse stopping Kenny Cross in Round 1, and Robelis Despaigne knocking out Junior dos Santos in the opening round.
Asked afterward about fighting again, Rousey said she did not see a better ending and wanted to have more children, while Carano said she did not know whether she would put her family through another camp after returning from a 17-year layoff.
