Production on The Resurrection of the Christ, Mel Gibson’s long-awaited follow-up to The Passion of the Christ, is officially set to begin in August. The sequel will be filmed at Italy’s famed Cinecittà Studios and other historic locations, bringing the next chapter of the story to life with an epic and spiritual scope.

Filming is expected to begin in August at Cinecittà Studios in Rome, where large-scale sets are already under construction. Mel Gibson is once again at the helm as director and producer through his Icon Productions banner, with Lionsgate also on board as co-producer and distributor.

Joining Gibson is Jim Caviezel, who reprises his role as Jesus. Other returning cast members include Maia Morgenstern as Mary and Francesco De Vito as Peter. The script is credited to Gibson, his brother Donal Gibson, and Braveheart writer Randall Wallace.

Filming will not be limited to Rome. Southern Italian towns such as Matera, Ginosa, Gravina, Laterza, and Altamura have been confirmed as additional locations. The production team has also scouted international sites, including Malta, Israel, and Morocco, to create a diverse and visually striking landscape that reflects the biblical era.

Gibson has described the upcoming film as ambitious in both scope and structure. Rather than a straightforward retelling, the story will explore a range of spiritual and supernatural themes. Reports suggest the film will touch on events spanning from the fall of the angels to the death of the last apostle. Gibson has worked on multiple versions of the script, including one he has referred to as more dreamlike and nonlinear, exploring realms like Sheol and Hell alongside earthly events.

Production is expected to continue into late 2025 and possibly early 2026, with a potential release date targeted for late 2026 or 2027. The team is currently finalizing logistics, budgeting, and approvals, while preparing locations across Italy for the demanding shoot.

Gibson’s original film, The Passion of the Christ, became a global phenomenon when it was released in 2004, grossing more than $370 million in the U.S. alone. With this sequel, he is aiming for something even more expansive, combining religious narrative with visual ambition and spiritual symbolism.

Stay tuned for more updates as production begins and details emerge about what promises to be one of the most talked-about films of the coming years.
