Prime Video has revealed the main cast for its upcoming series adaptation of Stephen King’s 1974 horror novel, “CARRIE.” The project will be helmed by Mike Flanagan, known for his work on series such as “The Haunting of Hill House” and “Midnight Mass.” Flanagan is set to write, showrun, and direct select episodes of the eight-episode series, which is described as a “bold and timely reimagining” of the original story.

A Legacy of Horror: The “Carrie” Franchise

Stephen King’s debut novel, “Carrie,” first published in 1974, quickly established him as a significant voice in horror literature. The story of a tormented teenage girl with telekinetic powers resonated widely, exploring themes of bullying, religious fanaticism, and alienation.

The novel’s impact was further amplified by Brian De Palma’s iconic 1976 film adaptation. Starring Sissy Spacek as Carrie White and Piper Laurie as Margaret White, the film became a critical and commercial success, earning Oscar nominations for both actresses and solidifying “Carrie” as a cornerstone of horror cinema. Its imagery, particularly the climactic prom scene, remains deeply embedded in popular culture.

Over the years, the “Carrie” story has seen several other adaptations. These include the 1_999 sequel “The Rage: Carrie 2_” (though not a direct adaptation of King’s work), a 2002 television film starring Angela Bettis, and a 2013 theatrical remake featuring Chloë Grace Moretz as Carrie and Julianne Moore as Margaret White. Each iteration has offered a different interpretation of King’s source material, reflecting contemporary concerns and filmmaking styles.

This upcoming Prime Video series marks the latest venture into the chilling world of Carrie White, promising a new perspective under Flanagan’s direction.

The New Iteration: Cast and Details

The series will explore the story of Carrie White, a high-school student living with her domineering mother. Following her father’s death, Carrie navigates public high school, deals with a significant bullying incident, and discovers she possesses telekinetic abilities.

The announced cast includes:

• Summer H. Howell (“Curse of Chucky,” “Cult of Chucky,” “Channel Zero”) has been cast in the lead role of Carrie White.
• Samantha Sloyan, who has previously collaborated with Flanagan on projects like “Midnight Mass” and “The Fall of the House of Usher,” will portray Margaret White, Carrie’s mother.
• Matthew Lillard (“Scream,” “The Life of Chuck”) is cast as Principal Grayle.
• Siena Agudong (Netflix’s “Resident Evil” series) will play Sue Snell.
• Alison Thornton (“Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce”) takes on the role of Chris Hargensen.
• Arthur Conti (“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” “House of the Dragon”) will play Billy Nolan.
• Amber Midthunder (“Prey”) has been cast as the gym teacher, Miss Desjardin.
• Josie Totah (“Saved by the Bell,” “Mr. Mayor”) will portray Tina.
• Joel Oulette (“Trickster,” “Avatar: The Last Airbender”) is cast as Tommy Ross.
• Thalia Dudek (“Doctor Who”) will play Emaline.

Mike Flanagan will also serve as an executive producer alongside Trevor Macy. The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios for Prime Video. The involvement of actors who have previously worked with Flanagan, alongside new talent, marks a notable aspect of the production’s casting strategy.
