Disney’s put out a live acoustic version of “Waiting on a Wish” with Rachel Zegler for their upcoming Snow White. It’s just her and this new song, unplugged, and as a Zegler fan, I’m into how it comes across ahead of the March 21 release.
Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the La La Land EGOT pair, wrote it fresh for this film, pulling inspiration from the wishing well in Disney’s 1937 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Marc Platt, one of the producers, thinks it’s got legs, saying it’s “a truly beautiful song for our new film that is bound to become iconic in its own right.” This take keeps it raw, Zegler’s voice front and center in a live setup.
Marc Webb’s directing the film, Erin Cressida Wilson wrote it, and it’s not your standard fairy tale redo. Marc Platt and Jared LeBoff are producing, with Callum McDougall exec-producing, and they’ve got Pasek and Paul on the soundtrack. This acoustic performance is a standalone moment, separate from the film’s full score.
The movie’s cast is solid: Gal Gadot’s the Evil Queen, Andrew Burnap (just did Othello) is Jonathan, Patrick Page voices the Magic Mirror. Dwarfs are Tituss Burgess (Bashful), Andrew Barth Feldman (Dopey), George Salazar (Happy), Andy Grotelueschen (Sleepy)—stage folks I know.
Pasek, Paul, Ian Eisendrath, and Dave Metzger produced this version; full soundtrack’s out March 14, before the film hits.
This Snow White isn’t the cartoon I grew up with. Zegler’s live acoustic “Waiting on a Wish” keeps it real—her voice cuts through, and it’s just her, no frills. I’m not waving a Disney flag here; I just like what she’s doing with this new tune.
