Five years after the tragic passing of Cameron Boyce, Jenna Ortega is reflecting on a special moment they shared early in their careers. The Beetlejuice Beetlejuice star recently opened up about an audition experience where Boyce stepped in during an uncomfortable situation, showcasing the kind-hearted nature he was known for.
In an interview with France’s Canal+, Ortega reminisced about the time they were both teenagers auditioning for a project. The scene required them to kiss, which was awkward for both of them as they’d known each other since they were around 11 years old. Reflecting on the moment, Ortega said, “We were supposed to be love interests… but because he obviously felt weird and he was a bit older, we both just kinda looked at each other and we were like, ‘No, we can’t do this.’”
Ortega described how Boyce’s reaction eased the tension she was feeling. “I was uncomfortable and having a hard time in the audition, but he just made everything better. I remember being really thankful and grateful that he did that.” She noted that even her Beetlejuice co-star Catherine O’Hara praised Boyce for being such a “gentleman” in that situation.
Cameron Boyce, who gained popularity through his roles in Jessie, Grown Ups, Descendants, and Mrs. Fletcher, tragically passed away in July 2019 at the age of 20. His death was due to complications from epilepsy, a condition his family later revealed he had been dealing with. Boyce’s passing left an indelible mark on those who knew him, and his family continues to honor his memory through the Cameron Boyce Foundation, which works to find a cure for epilepsy and promote awareness.
In reflecting on her friendship with Boyce, Jenna Ortega’s story highlights the impact he had on those around him, not just as a talented actor, but as a caring and thoughtful friend. As she shared this touching memory, fans are reminded of Boyce’s legacy of kindness and compassion, a legacy that continues to inspire.
